Owens Valley Petroglyphs.

I am addicted to photographing petroglyphs. What else can I say?

Eastern Sierras, California.

Wow, I've never seen a petroglyph quite so abstract before. Any idea what's going on here?

Not really. There are shapes and repition that I recognize from many of the petroglyph site around here, but this is the only one where everything is connected like this creating this "web" like effect.

I would venture into saying that of the petros in this area, this specific one is one of the youngest and made by the most recent occupents. I say this for 2 reasons: 1. If you just to the right of dead center of this rock you can see the classic deer shape, and on other rocks at this same site there is a large consintration of other deer petros, and 2. many of the petros in this site have some sort of red ocre rubbed into the indentations of the petros to make them stand out more. Both of these indicate more recent styling of petroglyphs from a more recent inhabitant of the area. Recent meaning before the western settlement.

Thanks for your thoughts. It's odd to see a semi-abstract, semi-representational petroglyph. In particular, that lower portion looks like nothing so much as a mountain with the sun behind it. First time I've seen a landscape depicted in Native American art. :)
