Artist's Comments

High in the Sierra backcountry I found this glacial melt pond while searching for compositions. I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this scene. Shortly after taking this shot my partners and I continued up the pass to investigate and we had the pleasure of seeing the Sierras at their best. Dime sized hail began to pelt us and any area that was not covered by clothing, like my hands, felt the sting of the ferocious hail. All of a sudden thunder rumbled right above us, or what we thought was thunder. It was actually gigantic boulders tumbling down the mountains faces. We had the pleasure of watching the rock slides on these 13000 ft peaks.

The peak on the left with a "Z" made from the snow is Mt. Agassiz 13882ft.

So few get to experience the Sierras at their finest. :)

I've got to say, I mostly fav'd this because I find it very strange to look at. The foreground rocks look massive compaired to the mountains and that gives a very uneasy sense of scale that is hard to describe. Nice subtle colours and a great reflection too.

The weather looks kinda grey and inclement here, and your description makes the photo trip sound outright dangerous! Weren't you scared when all those boulders came down?

well at first we thought it was lightning so we ran for cover. But when we realized that is was rockslides we moved to a safe distance to watch :)
